Job Description

Position Summary:  Plans, organizes and implements an engaging and impactful multi-grade instructional program that guides and encourages students to develop and reach their full academic potential. Supports social, emotional, cognitive and physical development of the students. Common instructional focus in language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. This curriculum alignment is tied directly to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) state standards.

Key Responsibilities:
Classroom Management Responsibilities:
•Establishes and enforces rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible
•Enforces administration policies and rules governing students.
•Instructs and monitors students in the use and care of equipment and materials, in order to prevent injuries and damage.
•Provides a positive and consistent classroom environment.
Curriculum Responsibilities:
•Prepares objectives and detailed lesson plans for courses of study, following the TEKS curriculum guidelines.
•Identifies and selects different instructional resources and methods.
•Communicates clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, etc. to students.
•Prepares for assigned classes in a timely fashion and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisors.
•Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
•Plans and conducts activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
•Instructs students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
•Encourages students to explore learning opportunities and persevere with challenging tasks.
•Guides and counsels students with adjustment and/or academic problems
•Prepares and implements remedial programs for students requiring extra help.
•Plans and supervises class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers or other experiential activities, and guide students in learning from those activities.
•Supervises, evaluates, and plans assignments for teacher assistants
•Sponsors extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organizations, and academic contests.
•Plans and prepares one (1) school event utilizing parent volunteers per semester.
Evaluation Responsibilities:
•Observes and evaluates students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
•Prepares, administers, and grades tests and assignments in order to evaluate students' progress.
•Prepares reports on students and activities as required by administration.
•Identifies children showing signs of emotional, developmental, or health related problems and reports them to the Program Director.
•Confers with parents or guardians, case managers, and administrators in order to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems.
•Meets with parents and guardians to discuss their children's progress.
•Coordinates and communicates with School Age Lead Teachers for tutoring and homework completion.
Record Keeping Responsibilities:
•Maintains accurate and complete Cumulative Records for each student
•Organizes and labels materials, and display students' work.
•Selects, stores, orders, issues, and inventories classroom equipment, materials, and supplies
•Maintains daily oral and written communication with parents.
•Maintains accurate and complete documentation of daily attendance.
Training Responsibilities:
•Attends professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence.
•Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees when appropriate.
Other Duties:
•Keeps up-to-date on developments in subject area, teaching resources and methods and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities.
•Ability to drive and transport children in a Family Place vehicle in a safe manner.
•Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education or Child Development with 2-3 years of experience as a classroom teacher for elementary students. Experience working in a multi-grade classroom preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Texas Driver’s License
Texas Teaching Certification
CPR and First Aid

Knowledge and Skills and Abilities:
•Knowledge of the effects of domestic violence on children.
•Knowledge and understanding of the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Standards.
•Knowledge of differentiated instruction.
•Knowledge of MS Word, Power point and Outlook software.
•Skilled at creating lesson plans for a multi-grade classroom.
•Strong organizational skills for maintaining multi-grade classroom documents, materials, and activities.
•Ability to use and present through audio/visual learning devices.
•Ability to provide constructive intervention activities that reinforce positive self-image and healthy coping skills.
•Ability to treat all children with respect and dignity regardless of their race, creed, religion or national origin.
•Ability to pass a criminal background check and a Texas Department of Family and Protective Services background check.

Mental and Physical Abilities: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must routinely lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.   

Working Conditions: Duties are usually performed seated with occasional periods of standing or walking. Work may be performed, but is not limited to an office environment and the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Work Time Frame: The Grade School Teacher position will be full time, year-round, with a summer schedule similar to a regular school district.  During the months of June and July, the position will be required to be on campus 3x per month (full days) for paperwork, planning, organizing, etc. The position is required to report back full-time the 2nd week in August to orient new parents and prepare for the upcoming school-year. If additional work days are required during the summer in order to meet expectations, the school teacher should work more than their summer requirements as most teachers in the public school system do.

Vacation: Only one week of vacation shall be allowed during the school year; any remaining vacation should be taken during the summer.

Holidays: The Family Place holidays are not the same as a regular school district as the campus will be open during Spring Break, MLK, President’s Day, Good Friday, Columbus Day; however, personal days or up to one week of vacation may be taken during the school year, which can be applied to the DISD school district holidays noted above.

Only the holidays listed in the employee handbook are available for employees of The Family Place.
