Job Description

Position Summary:  A Mentor with The Family Place Child Development Center program is a caring, responsible, adult who serves as a trusted friend and guide to students enrolled in the program. Helps to ensure that the student develops important academic and life skills, exposes young adults to new opportunities and a wide array of resources; makes positive life choices, stays in school, and graduates with a plan for pursuing post-secondary education.  Age range: 6th grade to 12th grade students.
Work hours: Most Saturdays – 8 hour work day and/or Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. 20 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:
•Prepares lesson plans and implements engaging mentoring sessions using the A Call To Men curriculum each week.
•Researches, plans, and helps organize off-campus events for mentoring students; minimum of (1) per month.
•Assists school-age children staff and provides supervision, intervention and other assistance as needed, to address challenging behaviors.
•Acts as a positive role model for students by leading by example.
•Listens to children and provides encouragement and support.
•Stimulates student interests by engaging them into new methods of learning and growing.
•Guides students to find solutions to obstacles they may face in their life.
•Provides constructive intervention activities that reinforce positive self-image, healthy coping skills, appropriate expressions of emotions and alternatives to violent behavior.
•Provides appropriate safety instructions when playing outside games and makes safety checks on play ground equipment to ensure the over-all safety of the children
•Reports safety issues or accidents to Program Director in a timely manner.
•Coordinates transportation and drives mentees to field trip activities in a safe manner and abides by all driving laws.
•Attends and participates in departmental and agency staff meetings and trainings; maintains professional competence through on-going trainings and education.

Other Duties: Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Child Development, Social Work or similar or current college student working towards a similar degree and any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  

Job Requirements

Licenses and Certifications:
•Valid Texas Driver’s License and clear driving record.
•Current CPR and First Aid Certification or must be able to take and pass CPR and First Aid within the first 60 days of hire.

Knowledge and Skills and Abilities:
•Knowledge of the signs of child abuse and neglect and the proper reporting procedures.
•Ability to safely drive TFP vehicles to transport clients and maintain a clear driving record.
•Ability to successfully pass required Texas DFPS criminal history background check.
•Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive relationships with children, co-workers and parents.
•Ability to treat all children and youth with dignity and respect regardless of their race, creed, religion or national origin.
•Ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the TDFPS standards and guidelines for child care centers, NAC accreditation standards and DASK program quality initiative standards.
•Willingness to maintain a flexible schedule.

Mental and Physical Abilities: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs; visual acuity is required for child supervision; repetitive stooping and bending with occasional lifting light to medium objects or small children is required. Ability to stand and walk for long periods at a time is required, as well as, the ability to run and participate in outside activities; ability to drive a Family Place vehicle and transport clients to field trips.
